Kerala’s Forest Department has introduced an innovative Tree Banking Scheme aimed at increasing green cover and promoting sustainable income for landowners. A highlight of the scheme is its focus on sandalwood cultivation, one of the most valuable tree species in India.

🌱 What is the Tree Banking Scheme?

This program provides financial incentives to individuals who plant and maintain approved tree species—including sandalwood—on private or leased land. It aims to combine environmental conservation with economic benefits, helping Kerala combat deforestation while supporting rural livelihoods.

Who Can Apply?

Landowners or those with a 15-year lease on land.Applicants must register at their local Social Forestry Range Office.Only government-approved tree species are allowed.A formal agreement with the Forest Department is mandatory.

💰 Financial Assistance

Participants receive yearly support for up to 15 years, with payments based on the number of trees:10–100 trees: ₹30/tree/year101–250 trees: ₹25/tree/year251–500 trees: ₹20/tree/year501–750 trees: ₹15/tree/year751–1000 trees: ₹10/tree/year After 15 years, trees can be harvested or sold, but only with prior approval from forestry officials.
